Camp Sunday! I’ve been out at Camp Aldersgate with 72 youth and 20 adults all week long. This Sunday our youth lead all three services with music, skits, and lessons from our week at camp. As a result I only played two songs that we used at camp.

Undignified (D) >Nothing summarizes a group of high school and junior high students better than this song. “I’ll become even more undignified than this, some may say it’s foolishness.” And believe me, we danced. We danced dances worthy of David in 2 Samuel 6. “na na na na na na HEY!”

The Space In Between Us (Ab) > This song was used as a specific part of a lesson early in our week but quickly became our anthem. Not all camp songs have to be jumpy, clappy, dancy, motiony and covered with cheeze :) The youth kept requesting this song throughout the week because the lyrics really connected with them and what we were doing with the lessons. It was a real joy to bring it back and share it with the entire congregation.

The rest of the service consisted of 3 skits performed by our cabin groups, 2 performances by our dance and sign language workshops, and 3 stories from youth about their experience at camp. We closed service by surrounding the congregation with a prayer circle and singing “I Hear a Sound” (an old camp favorite) before closing with a final “Attitude Check” which is how we close campfire each night. We scream “praise the Lord” down by the waterfront and listen for anywhere between 4 and 7 echos depending on how loud the youth can be. This is a little more interesting when we do it indoors in our worship center. I think we may have frightened a few people.

My recaps have been very odd recently I know. Some normalcy should start returning next week. For more Sunday fun head on over to Fred McKinnon’s place.
